The Best Books for Spooky Season

Spooky season is here people and it is time to get excited! Is there anything better than cuddling up with a thriller, wrapped up in an enormous knit blanket, sipping a warm PSL from Starbucks? The only thing that might top that is if there was a candle lit that makes the room spell like apple pie. The season of spooky is upon us, let's find out what to read!

Lock Every Door

Riley Sager

This book is sure to send chills up your spine. Written by Riley Sager, Lock Every Door tells the story of a young woman that is desperate for money and a place to live. After seeing an ad posted to house sit at a notoriously creepy but expensive building in NYC, Jules Larsen decides to give it a shot. However, there are a few rules to this job: no sleeping out, no bothering the high-profile residents, and absolutely no guests. Since Jules is strapped for cash, jobless, and technically homeless she decides to take the job offer. We soon discover the stories of the Bartholomew might not be myths and that Jules might be in more trouble than she anticipated.

This book was certainly very creepy. It took a huge turn towards the end and I can wholeheartedly admit I had no clue it was coming. It is mysterious, eery, and perfect for spooky season. It'll leave you shocked and maybe, just maybe, scared enough to lock every door.

The Girl From Widows Hill

Megan Miranda

Young Arden Maynor was abducted as a girl while she was sleepwalking in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm. Friends, family, and the public went wild looking for her. A miracle occurred, and she was found alive. The mother of Arden wrote a book about the trauma they endured and fame shortly followed. The anniversary was especially hard as it reminded the public of her abduction and the fan mail and stalkers continued. When Arden was old enough, she moved and changed her name. Now, she lives hundreds of miles away and goes by Olivia. However, with the threat of the twentieth anniversary of her disappearing looming, Olivia begins to feel as though people have found her and are watching her. With the stress of this, she starts sleepwalking again. Soon after, Olivia wakes up in her yard with a corpse at her feet of someone that was in her life when she identified as Arden.

I have not read this book yet but it is on my list for the 2020 spooky season reads. I've read great reviews about it. Megan Miranda is known for her ability to create an immense amount of suspense throughout. This is a must-have for this October.

The Wicked Sister

Karen Dionne

Rachel Cunningham has locked herself away in a psychiatric facility as she can't depend on her memory to tell her the truth about what happened fifteen years ago. She believes she is responsible for the death of her parents. After learning new details about the murder of her mom and dad, Rachel returns to the spot she once felt at home, her family's cabin in Michigan. Rachel starts to uncover secrets about her family that are evil, and the bond that she shares with her sister might be the most evil of all.

This is another book I have not had the pleasure of reading yet. I am a sucker for a good thriller and this is known as just that. This book reflects themes that many of us have encountered of sisterhood, nature versus nurture, and love and evil. It is filled with psychological suspense and might be the exact book we need this spooky season.
